How to hibernate strawberries

09/23/2018 15:13

In autumn time, there is a lot to be done in the garden. Many of you have strawberries. They also need care before a stiff winter comes in. Zazimování concerns not only strawberries that are planted loosely in the garden, but also those in the boxes on the balcony.

Strawberry in the garden

In order for the strawberry to survive the winter and could give you a lot of juicy strawberries next year, it is necessary in this period, that is, in October and November, before it comes to permanent frosts, to proceed to its thorough wintering. Among other things, you will also achieve the fact that there will be no pests in the strawberry and do not attack the disease.

Beware of frost

Damage to strawberries due to frost is often irreversible. Therefore, it must be thoroughly protected against freezing. It is true that if the temperature at the depth of the root system of the strawberry falls below minus 15 degrees Celsius, it is permanently damaged and in the spring it can be replaced directly by the new plant.

Soil treatment

In the autumn, create a strawberry favorable conditions, especially with regard to soil moisture. Surround the sprouts and get rid of the weeds. Plants, or surrounding necks, cover the soil. Compost can also be used.

Then protect the whole bush before freezing in a way that you cover it with spruce. This improves the aromatic properties of the next harvest of strawberries.

In order to prevent the formation of molds and other diseases on the strawberry, or the absence of pests, it is necessary to remove the dry and damaged leaves, several centimeters above the "heart" (about 10 cm above the ground level). At the same time, spray their sheets with chemical preparations.

Cover the strawberries with strawberries and winter. Ideally, a non-woven white textile cloth is ideal.

Stuffing strawberries in boxes

If you grow strawberries in boxes on balconies or terraces, you must also prepare them properly for the winter. If possible, transfer them to the garden. Then the procedure is practically the same as above.

If you do not have a garden, cover the flowerpot with broth, cut too-sprouted shoots. You do not have to overdo it with the dressing, just enough to keep the plants completely dry. With spring coming, put strawberries into new soil.

Dog Excrement Compost

The faeces of most domestic animals can be composted under certain conditions. It is an organic material subject to biodegradation, but certain rules must be observed. Dog feces are the feces of carnivorous animals and can bind pathogenic organisms that transmit diseases to humans as well. Since feces may contain different diseases or parasite eggs, it is necessary to ensure that the temperature of these materials exceeds 65 ° C for at least 6 days. Dog feces can be inoculated into a depth of about 15 - 20 cm below the surface in a quantity (max. 10 feces) either to the compost in the home composter or directly to the soil, and always lightly with lime. Dog feces can not be placed in special collection bins for biowaste intended only for plant residues.

There is a special dog-excrement composter that is placed in the ground (see photo).

In a simple way, it's possible to get the plastic container (lid) with the lid, cut off the bottom and drill it into the walls of the hole (due to aeration). In the event that the container is not completely dropped into the ground, the holes below the top edge, which will be above the ground, will not be drilled. However, if we have already drilled them, it is possible to overlay them with a tape to prevent the possible spread of odor. Next, it is necessary to dig in the ground of the pit, to put a modified container in it, to put on the bottom smaller stones or pieces of bricks, etc. (because of the drainage), a bit of a mixture of dry grass, leaves, twigs, etc. Then there is only to throw excrements, (possibly with a special disinfectant) and spread with dry grass, leaves, twigs.

In the compost, it is important for the earthworms and other organisms to access it, so choose a permeable pad. You can build your own composter in a larger garden, which you build from different boards or battens. Do not build compost right next to the house. You can use the pumpkin in the summer to lay the compost mix, their leaves compost in the summer and prevent it from drying out.

Mix all the necessary materials together, or gradually lay them on top of each other. To quickly build, choose a combination of clay - grass and leaves. Compost with water or fermented poultry. If weeds appear on the compost, immediately remove it. Weed, thanks to good growing conditions, weeds can spoil the entire compost. Compost ripening lasts for at least half a year if you want it to be really good.

How about a compost in a small garden?

You can give everything that is organic to the compost. Most often, you can reuse skins and fruit and vegetables, such as unbleached coffee filters. Compose egg shells, nut shells and garden waste, such as leaves, grass, ash, soot and more. It is not appropriate to compost only the grass.

Advantages of plastic composters and their size

Plastic composters are currently made from washable and often also 100% recycled material. Their advantage is their high resistance to weathering, without requiring any complicated maintenance. The composite material is very lightweight and therefore easy to handle. They are equipped with loading and unloading holes, which allow you to simply insert the biodpact and re-select the humus. A suitable plastic composter has large lids. The assembly of the composter is very simple, you have it in a few minutes.
